NRVTAP Member Home
Congratulations! You now have access to all of the free services that NRVTAP offers to help you prepare your 2021 income tax returns, including the free, IRS-approved tax preparation software known as TaxSlayer.
Note: You must access TaxSlayer through the link on the Step 2 page to get free software access.
You cannot go to the main TaxSlayer website and access the free software. If the system asks you to pay then you have used the wrong link and must come back and create a new account through our link.
Not sure where to start? Head over to our Tax Process Overview page, and learn about the overall process

Support we provide
We know taxes are complicated, and we’ve got something to help you through every step of the way.
Individualized Support
Sometimes you just need to talk to someone, and we’re here for that, too.
Clinic appointments: Dedicated time for you to talk with a trained and IRS-certified volunteer about your tax return. We can get you going if you’ve gotten stuck, or give it one last look to make sure it is good before you send it in. We offer both in-person and remote appointments. Please see our appointment page for further details, important requirements, and limitations.
Clinic walk-ins: We reserve space at all clinics for walk-ins, and we historically have had ~20% of clients not show for their appointment, so this is a great way to get help if you can’t get an appointment. You can walk-in even if you’ve already attended another clinic.
Office Hours: Just like your favorite professor, we’ll be waiting to help anyone who needs it on a first come, first served basis. Office hours are remote only via zoom. Come to as many of these as you want, and we’ll help you get moving on your return.
Tax emails: Taxes are complicated, and sometimes even our volunteers get stuck. If you’ve got a tricky situation that needs some extra technical help that isn’t covered in a guide / our FAQ / or solved at a clinic, send us an email to: taxassistance@nrvtap.com. Please note that simple questions that are covered in our guides or FAQ will be referred back to those resources, and if you haven’t already done so, we may suggest that you make an appointment at one of our clinics.
General Support
These materials are available 24/7 to help you whenever you need it. Many of our clients last year were able to prepare their returns using just these tools, and we strongly encourage everyone to start their return using with them.
Scenario Guides: These walk you through preparing your return, step by step, screenshot by screenshot. Our basic scenarios walk you through initially creating your return, and the Special Circumstances guides help you make adjustments for less common situations.
Video Tutorials: We provide video tutorials walking through how to use TaxSlayer to prepare your taxes for the basic scenarios, and the most common special circumstances situations we see. These videos put the guides into action, and walk you through step-by-step, showing you an overview of TaxSlayer and how to enter information from various tax forms you may have.
These resources should enable you to complete your entire return in most situations. If you book an appointment, we expect that you have started your return using these resources.
COVID-19 Pandemic Policies
At NRVTAP, our goal is to help you do your taxes for free, and we hope the only thing you get at our clinic is a refund. To keep you and us safe, we are following CDC, Minnesota Department of Health, and the University of Minnesota guidelines, and have implemented the following COVID-19 policies:
Remote events: We have no requirements regarding COVID precautions for our remote events. Please take the steps you feel necessary to virtually attend our event safely.
In-person events: Our in-person events are held at University of Minnesota facilities. All clinic participants must abide by both NRVTAP and current UofM policies and guidance regarding COVID-19. By signing up for an in-person event you agree to abide by these policies. NRVTAP reserves the right to make policy adjustments at any time, and to refuse service to individuals who will not comply with our requirements. Current University of Minnesota COVID information can be found here. Please review the following NRVTAP COVID-19 policies:
Masks are required at all in-person events. See the UofM’s Face Covering Protocol for more details.
Stay home if you are sick. Many current symptoms of COVID appear similar to a bad cold or the flu, so if you feel under the weather at all, please stay away from others and take care of yourself. You can cancel your appointment up to 4 hours in advance of the start time.
NRVTAP may need to make adjustments to the clinic schedule based on current pandemic conditions. This may include shifting the format of an event (such as from in-person to remote), or adjusting the number of clients we can accept. While we will try to give you as much notice as possible, these changes can be made at any point, including up to the start time of the event. If we must reduce our event capacity, we will cancel appointments based on when they were scheduled - the last apppointment made will be cancelled first, and so on. Anyone whose appointment is cancelled will be allowed to reschedule, but we cannot guarantee that there will be event openings available for rebooking. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, and please know that we will not take these actions unless required. We encourage you to book your appointment early, and for the earliest event you can be prepared for.
